The Mixed-Up Thoughts of Michael Francis Booth

Very Deep UV Light Source

A very extreme UV light source has been invented by, among others, Margaret Murnane. I used to work on a femotosecond ring laser which was invented by Dr. Murnane. She’s obviously pretty smart.

Oh yes, I remember that ring laser well. It still haunts the occasional nightmare. If I may wax poetic…

One ring laser to rule them all, one ring laser to find them
One ring laser to bring them all and in the darkness bind them In the basement laboratory in the land of Ithaca where no shadows lie.

Better version

One ring laser to rule them all, one ring laser to find them One ring laser to bring them all and in the laboratory bind them In the land of Ithaca where no shadows lie.

I like it! Although there actually are quite a lot of shadows lying in Ithaca.

Does this post come from Los Alamos? Or are you a different person who is haunted by a ring dye laser? (There are so many possible candidates!)

Beneath the dome of a deep grey sky, The lonely sun hides it face, One cannot tell if it’s low or high, There are no shadows anyplace,

Darker still were the stones, Cold the halls they did form, Professors seated on their thrones, Stirring rarely to inform,

Guess and enter a field of mines, Who I am and where I dwell? Seek a hint in the early lines, For I am not quick to tell!
