The Mixed-Up Thoughts of Michael Francis Booth

Beer on the Wall

The site where you can find “99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall” written in over 500 different computer languages is fun in an extremely geeky way.

Even more geeky: the “99 Bottles” program has been ported to Charles Babbage’s Analytical Engine. The Analytical Engine was never actually built (it’s the most famous piece of vaporware in engineering history) so you’ll have to use an emulator to run this program. I didn’t know that these emulators existed, until now. An Analytical Engine Emulator represents the logical extreme of retrocomputing, until someone gets around to writing a “99 Bottles” program for DNA.

(You can see Babbage’s original Difference Engine at London’s Science Museum. Apparently you’ll have to actually travel to London because the Science Museum took its web page offline - I guess a technology has to be over 100 years old before the Science Museum can understand it.)
