The Mixed-Up Thoughts of Michael Francis Booth

Castle Black Returns

Hello, world!

It’s been years since the castleblack.net URL returned anything but a cryptic promise of better things to come. Now the wait is over. My web site is back, as a blog.

Back in the glory days of 1999, nobody really knew what a personal website was supposed to look like. Most of the world’s personal websites, including mine, were built out of a collection of static HTML files. I dreamed about setting up a fancy database-backed site but I never had the time.

Progress has been rapid. The personal web site now has a name (“blog”) and there’s a choice of pre-packaged blogging tools. This site uses Movable Type, which I picked because:

  • It’s free (for non-commercial use)
  • It runs on my own server, and helps to justify all the money I pay to dreamhost.com

Right now I’m just trying to get a hang of the software. Expect lots of changes over the next week or so. Hopefully I will then feel the inspiration to keep writing. Now that it’s no longer my job, Web publishing is a lot more interesting.

Okay, normally I wouldn’t comment on my own post. But testing is testing.

I also have to record this URL, which has lots of hints for setting up Movable Type: Anders sets up Movable Type
